Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Living a Meaningful Life, Even Through Difficulty

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT (pronounced as a single word), is a modern, evidence-based approach to therapy that takes a different angle than traditional methods. Rather than trying to eliminate uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, ACT helps you change your relationship with them — so they have less power over your choices and your life.

The core idea behind ACT is that suffering often comes not from painful experiences themselves, but from our struggle to avoid or control them. When we spend our energy fighting difficult thoughts or waiting until anxiety disappears before living fully, we can end up feeling even more stuck. ACT teaches skills for observing your thoughts without getting tangled in them, opening up to difficult emotions without being overwhelmed, and committing to actions that align with what genuinely matters to you.

ACT incorporates mindfulness practices alongside tools from behavioral psychology. It's effective for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, stress, and many other concerns — and it's particularly well-suited for people who feel like they've tried hard to feel better but keep running into the same walls.

The goal of ACT isn't a life free from struggle — it's a rich, meaningful life that moves forward even in the presence of difficulty. Many clients find this approach deeply liberating.

If you're curious about whether ACT might be right for you, we'd love to talk. Reach out to our office to connect with one of our ACT-trained therapists.
